Personalized displacement ventilation as an energy-efficient solution for airborne disease transmission control in offices

There is evidence to suggest that airborne droplets play an important role in the transmission of respiratory diseases. The highest risk exposure these pathogens indoor environments, where airflow control has been recognized as one most effective engineering means combat its spread. However, this can contribute a significant increase energy costs, conventional ventilation often not designed remove contaminants efficiently. In study, Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations were used analyze how novel approach, called Personalized Displacement Ventilation (PerDiVent), simultaneously reduce both pathogenic and costs open office. addition, thermal comfort noise investigated assess practicality concept. PerDiVent was found cross infection by factor 1.08–2.0 compared mixing worst best case scenarios analyzed, lead savings mechanical power at least 30%. Furthermore, there great potential further improve system stated numbers substantially with relatively simple alterations design. Tools be advantage for such optimization are also proposed work. These include integral model analytical metrics estimate reduction cross-infection function PerDiVent’s effectiveness removing contaminants. Finally, modular highly flexible arrangement, which makes it suitable retrofitting purposes various environments integration current systems. concept shows promise future, required create healthier more sustainable environments.
